What Is Therapy?

Everyone has mental health. As with our physical bodies sometimes our mental health can become ill. 615 million people suffer from anxiety and depression (World Health Organisation, 2016).Talking therapies like psychotherapy and counselling can help individuals to understand what is going on, explore options, release frustrations and adapt to life.
There are many types of psychotherapy and counselling. It can be disheartening to see the range of services available and have to select a therapy hoping it will suit your needs. We are happy for you to contact us to discuss anything that can be confusing during this process.
At the heart of therapy is a good relationship. Relational psychotherapy encompasses all types of relationship and the difficulties that may arise, i.e. work colleagues, marital problems, parents, family, children. This way of relating can appear within the therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist and we can explore these learnt behavioural patterns which may have served you well but don’t anymore. When we were growing up, we learnt ways to relate, to survive – these ways may not be up to the task with your problems now. We will find other ways together.
What Is Gestalt?
Gestalt psychotherapy and counselling is a humanistic and existential approach that we will adapt to the unique individual that you are. There will be an emphasis on the ‘here and now’, what is happening in the moment. We will encourage you to explore what is going on for you, your circumstances and the relationship between these elements.
Being present, evaluating what sensations are in our body, what we feel and think, what is going on outside of us and how they relate. This enables the individual to improve their awareness of themselves. As therapists we will work with you to create dialogue, look at fixed patterns and behaviours that have led you to therapy and share observations and experience in order to challenge your perception and understanding.
In gestalt we consider a holistic approach to the human experience taking into account the treatment of the whole person rather than just their symptoms.
